Jerry Jones reiterates confidence that Dak Prescott is ready for Cowboys Week 1 opener: ‘He’s there’

Even if it’s been bumpy at times, all roads are leading to Dak Prescott lining up under center for the Cowboys in Week 1. The Dallas quarterback entered the summer looking to bounce back from his season-ending ankle injury from a year ago and, thus far, that recovery process has gone smoothly. While the club certainly would have liked to have seen Prescott see some live reps in the preseason, a shoulder strain threw a wrench in those plans. That injury is reportedly healing well after the quarterback underwent a second MRI to check in on the progress.

So while those ailments may have raised some concerns at points this summer, there’s plenty of confidence coming out of the Cowboys organization that Prescott will be ready to roll. The 28-year-old threw a number of passes prior to Dallas’ preseason matchup against the Texans on Saturday and Jerry Jones noted pregame that he’d be starting had it been a regular-season contest.

During his appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Jones doubled down on that notion, highlighting that there is zero trepidation surrounding Prescott’s readiness for the season.

“I wouldn’t be nervous this morning as to where he is in his recovery. He’s there,” Jones said, via the official team website. “I’d like for him to have this week of practice just to get ready to play Tampa, but of course we’ve got two and a half weeks. But the bottom line is he’s there.”

At the moment, the Cowboys are ramping Prescott up slowly. While he has been held out of the preseason and out of team drills, he did throw roughly 50 passes prior to that preseason exhibition with Houston on Saturday. Head coach Mike McCarthy also expects more from Prescott this week in practice.

“When he wants to right now he can let it go and does,” Jones said. “A lot of those exercises that he does as well as the actually throwing the ball, that’ll increase as each day goes by, each practice goes by, that’ll increase as go toward Tampa. It’s interesting to note, though, that if he’d had to, he could’ve finished a game. If he’d had to, he could’ve gone out in my mind the next week and played. But since we’re over 17 games away from potentially even being in the playoffs and hopefully several games in the playoffs, it just doesn’t make any sense. Just slightly evaluating it says, give it a little rest.”

Jones also noted that these restrictions the team is putting on Prescott are more about injury prevention rather than the quarterback’s inability to perform.

“I have no compunction about him going out there and playing against Tampa, or for that matter playing early,” Jones said. “I just want to do everything we can so that there’s no issues as we go on through the season because we didn’t give it a little rest in the offseason.”

The Cowboys and Buccaneers will open up the 2021 regular season on Thursday, Sept. 9 in Tampa.
